Department of Environment
The Department is responsible for managing the environment for its well-being, improved livelihoods and sustainable economic growth for present and future generations. It achieves its mandate by carrying out the following functions:
- Develops polices, legislation, standards and guidelines for environmental management.
- Enforces compliance to environmental legislation;
- Integrates environmental concerns into developmental agenda;
- Establishes a functional environmental information systems;
- Complies with international environmental obligations;
- Conserves biodiversity in and outside of protected areas;
- Establishes relevant structures for effective management of the environment;
- Strengthens cooperation with development partners on environmental management programmes; and
- Sensitizes the public on environmental issues.
